Happy Thursday! It’s been a year of You Make Me Sick! And yesterday we get a remix from Dora Jar.
Ashnikko came into my life for the first time when their song Slumber Party went viral on TikTok in 2021. I searched them up, started listening to their EP, DEMIDEVIL and the rest is history.
Since then, I’ve fallen in love with their unrelenting and aggressive music, and how they manage to mix in so many genres; Hip Hop, trap, metal, bubblegum pop, rock, punk – you’ve got it all with Ashnikko. Their music makes me feel vengeful, hot, hyper, and angry. My boyfriend calls it my ‘horny music’ and he’s not wrong.
You Make Me Sick! was the first single released off their debut album, Weedkiller, which was all ours August 25, 2023. It hit me like a ton of bricks and is still a song I listen to at least daily.
The visuals were everything you’d expect from Ashnikko – contorted bodies, covered in clothing that looks to be made of skin, feeding her freaky babies. I’m not going to explain any further. You should watch it.
Many commented on the video singing Ashnikko’s praise, saying it made them emotional and perfectly encapsulates what it is to be female. Literally twerking the anger away.
This remix is not what I expected
Not because I haven’t listened to Dora Jar’s music, not because I don’t know what she’s capable of, but because I have never imagined this song softly. I yearn for the nu-metal guitar opening and I forget that rage can serve as a portal for the sadness underneath.
“You Make Me Sick! Is one of my favorite and most played songs of the past year. It unlocked my feminine rage in such a liberating way that it drove me to tears multiple times,” says Jar. When Ashnikko asked her to do a remix, she says that, along with her producer friend apob, “we unearthed the sadness from the anger and made a collage of emotion.”
Dora Jar’s breathy harmonies in this remix, takes it from a ragey vengeance, to a dreamy ethereal fairyland of sorrow. The acoustic guitar and the lyrics:
I’m empty, from filling you up
Take my energy, are you happy now I’m stuck?
I’m in love.
Ashnikko said the cutest thing to PAPER magazine about Dora: “She’s the type of person I can imagine writes songs in her dreams and then wakes up and remembers them in their entirety.”
Dora’s voice in this song really feels like some creepy, sad, yet trustworthy whisper you might follow in your dreams. Now I’m probably going to be listening to her (including this remix) for the rest of the month.
Bye!
