MJ is an LA born, Houston based independent rapper. She’s been creating music since 2011, pulling inspiration from a wide range of artists she loved growing up; like Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, and Beyonce. She credits Drake and Kendrick Lamar for why she started making her own music. In January, she released a 2 track project called MJMTHERAPPER x Love Set and I listened to it about 20 times. Her unique flow sounds like it’s chasing the beat and her lyrics paint a very clear picture.
“The songs go from a more traditional R&B production to a Marvin Gaye-esque sound. All with me rapping lyrics that are catchy yet brutally honest as hell,” she says.
The first track, Rendezvous, is supposed to represent the good side of love, but all I’m hearing are stories of unreciprocated devotion, emotional abuse, and petty shit. I had to ask her about it.
She says it’s more so representing the hopeless romantic in her. “When you are deeply into a person despite them not exactly being the best for you or even the best versions of themselves […] but love, infatuation, etc will make you overlook those things.
So, by “good side”, I think she means more “blinded by love.” Which, I’ll admit, does feel really good (until it doesn’t).
The second track, Everytime, is about the bad sides of love. It’s about fooling yourself by starting to imagine a future with a fuckboy. “Like, I know you a fuck boy/hot mess but I enjoy your sex and company.” Both track are about past personal “relationships, situationships, sexual hook ups, etc.”
MJ says her music is authentic because she writes about her real life experiences. She’s not afraid to try new things and and writes about her own life as she sees fit.
